All of State Route 933 is situated within St. Joseph County. This state highway is not included as a part of the National Highway System, a network of routes deemed most important for the nation's economy, mobility and defense.[2][3]
SR 933 southern terminus is at the St. Joseph-Elkhart County line. SR 933 heads due west toward South Bend. Near Mishawaka SR 933 meets State Road 331. Then SR 933 meets State Road 23 at an interchange. SR 23 and SR 933 are concurrent for 0.61 miles (0.98 km), then SR 933 turns north toward Michigan. From SR 23 to Marion Street, SR 933 are routed on one way Streets, with northbound on Michigan Street and southbound on Main Street. North of Marion Street SR 933 passes by the University of Notre Dame and Holy Cross College. SR 933 and Interstate 80/Interstate 90/Indiana Toll Road have an interchange. Then north of South Bend SR 933 northern terminus is at the Michigan State Line, where SR 933 meets M-51. [4]
The east-west part of SR 933 was part of the Lincoln Highway. Then in 1917 the east-west part of SR 933 became Indiana State Road 2 and the north-south became Indiana State Road 1. In 1920, Indiana State Road 2 was rerouted to the current U.S. Route 30. When Indiana State Road 2 was rerouted the route became Indiana State Route 46. In 1926, U.S. Route 31 replaced Indiana State Road 1 on this route. Then in 1935, US 33 was commissioned in Indiana. Then in 1982, US 31 was moved to the St. Joseph Valley Parkway and the route was renamed Business US 31. The SR 933 designation was created in April 1998, when US 33 was decommissioned north of US 20 and Business US 31 was decommissioned.[5]
The entire route is in St. Joseph County.
